imageWe heard whispers this evening that UNITE HERE Local 40 has finally reached a union contract agreement with the combined bargaining unit of the Westin Bayshore, Fours Seasons, downtown Renaissance and the Hyatt Regency. True?

This would be terrific news for the Vancouver hotel scene, since a strike would have been terrible news for all industry stakeholders, especially visitors to Vancouver.

Considering the hard line that the union took throughout contract negotiations, I have a feeling that the Big-Four hotels probably gave up something significant to avoid pending job action. Perhaps one less room credit per housekeeping room attendant (or something else substantial) crept into the collective agreement that was finally agreeable to the union. We’ll try to find out what the real deal is and report back right here.

Hopefully this is all behind us--we would rather feature more interesting stories than strike updates!

UPDATE: 19/09/07 The latest word on negotiations is that Local 40 and the Big-Four have apparently reached a tentative contract agreement, and the union will be voting to ratify the agreement later today.
