Vancouver Hotel Updates from the Geek-osphere

After meeting Robert Lewis of Techvibes last week at a local function, I discovered that I had the dubious (and delightful) honour of being featured as the Techvibes ”Geek of the Week” (thanks Rob!). I know that I’m a bona fide hotel nerd, but adding ‘geek’ to the equation has been really pioneering in the the hotel blogosphere.

Speaking of geeks, Vancouver’s hotel scene was featured in a couple of interesting posts on two local Vancouver blogs last week:

Tech Friendly Hotel Recommendations

First off, Rebecca Bollwitt (aka Miss604) received an email from Mark, a technology geek and blogger from Chicago.  Mark was asking for some hotel recommendations in Vancouver based on a series of suggested parameters.

Miss 604 wrote up her recommendations on her blog, and I think she did a pretty nice job trying to deliver on the requested ‘experience’ given to her by this Chicagan out-of-towner.

Here’s a snippet:

Mark’s email stated what he was looking for:

  • Close to downtown city center
  • Not a corporate chain ( i.e. no Marriott, Hilton, Sheraton, etc.)
  • Ideally something more “boutique”, artsy, good for a web 2.0 geek
  • Close to public transportation and ethnic restaurants
  • Maybe close to Stanley Park
  • No stratospheric prices, but something between 3 and 4 star

Although there’s no shortage of amazingly tasty ethnic food everywhere you go, I’ve done a little digging, put the word out, and come up with the following places to stay:

The only addition I would probably make would be the Moda Hotel on Seymour Street. This is a renovated heritage property with still more interesting reno projects to come in the restaurant and wine bar. Rates are definitely on the budget side (summer rates start at $119), so it might be worth checking out. You’ll have to suffer through a flash hotel website intro though...yuk.

Summer Snow at the Marriott Pinnacle

Jeffrey Simpson, a resident blogger at Metroblogging Vancouver featured an image snapped last week in front of the Marriott Pinnacle. No doubt some guests woke up and wondered what happened to our already crappy summer weather when they saw snow-covered streets!

So what was the deal? A film shoot of course, and Jeffery dug around for the scoop:

“I’ve done a bit of net popping around to see if I could figure out what film was being shot there, but I haven’t found anything. My guess it’s either Christmas Cottage or Snow Demon, given the winter effects [vdc]."

I was actually down at the Pinnacle and the Renaissance that morning to greet some hotel guests that had booked with the company I work for.  I asked one of the film-crew associates why there was snow everywhere - turns out it’s for a Nissan commercial.

Thanks for the update R_E! Glad you stopped by.

C.

Yeah, that’s a few blocks from my place; I passed by on the way back from BarCamp in Gastown that day. It was a commercial for the new Nissan Rogue, the mini-SUV crossover thing replacing the X-Trail, hence the crazy weather I guess. In the morning they had greenscreens up on the Coal Harbour side of the street for some kind of special FX stuff later I guess.

There was actually a film shoot a block away as well though so not surprising that you were confused; I walked right past Jessica Alba getting her makeup done in her trailer that morning.
