The Hotel Chick Reveals Housekeeping Secrets

Without a doubt one of the most difficult jobs in a hotel is working as a housekeeping room attendant. While most hotel employees have busy days and slower days depending on volume, housekeeping staff get the same number of rooms to clean day in and day out, regardless of demand patterns. Less rooms sold, fewer room attendants on shift.

The physical demands of housekeeping are challenging, and the necessary attention to detail adds significant pressure. New elements are constantly added to the guestroom product (such as more bedding, bathroom amenities etc.), while productivity metrics tend to remain flat even though there is actually more work to do for the room attendant. We call this “amenity creep”, and it’s a legitimate concern for housekeeping employees everywhere.

We’re always on the lookout for hotel industry employee blogs, and this weekend I discovered a interesting site maintained by a hotel housekeeping room attendant.

Self-styled as the “Hotel Chick”, this blogger is new to the role of hotel housekeeper. The Hotel Chick writes about the challenges of training for her job, and she reveals all kinds of interesting information about her daily life as a new hotel housekeeper.

The Hotel Chick is good read, and a very transparent look into “A day in the life of a Hotel Housekeeper, a hard walk in my shoes.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: Shortly after I wrote this piece, the Hotel Chick’s tone on her blog took a bit of dive to the...um..."raw" side. I just read that she has actually parted ways with her housekeeping job, and has written a series of pretty bitter posts about the whole thing. Not really my place to judge, but just be forewarned if you decide to click over for a peek. Best of luck to you Hotel Chick, but count me out as a future reader.

Hey thank you so much for the compliment and review.  I love your site too.

Thanks HC, for coming by!

*sad face*

I did not vent after the hotel job that I had.  I blogged everything up to the day I quit that job and I continued to persue my hotel experience.  I’m housekeeping again with a hotel with less amenities and less of an attitude.  I enjoy it.
