The Donald Breaks Ground in Toronto
Chris · October 11, 2007
Donald Trump is part TV show, part vodka brand, part clothing line, part pageant magnate...and all “over-the-top” hotel and real estate developer.
Trump has developed many fine hotels and resorts in New York City, Atlantic City and Miami, and he’s now moving hotel operations into Canada.
According to Toronto real estate blogger John Pasalis, the Trump hotel project in Toronto has been through some major development woes over the last years:
“After a failed partnership with the Ritz Carleton hotel group, the project re-launched in 2004. Despite a highly publicized battle with Harry Stinson’s now defunct Sapphire Tower for the title of tallest residential condo in Canada, sales for Trump Tower never really picked up. In July of this year, the developers announced that they would be cutting their condo down in size to 57 floors from the 70 they originally planned to build.
I am sure this ground breaking will come as a bit of a surprise to the many real estate pundits who doubted the project would ever start construction.”
On Friday October 12th Trump himself along with his daughter Ivanka and his son Don Jr. will be in Toronto to break ground for their first Trump hotel project in Canada.
Yesterday Trump addressed a crowd by Trump Tower at Central Park in New York where he announced a new hotel brand called “Trump Hotel Collection”.
By 2010, hotels with the Trump name are scheduled to pop up in Chicago, Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale, Hawaii, Central America, Toronto, Scotland, and Dubai.
“The preeminence of the Trump name in the real estate market makes us uniquely qualified to succeed in the luxury hotel arena and bring it to a global market,” added Jim Petrus, chief operating officer of Trump International Hotels Management LLC. “As a new brand, Trump Hotel Collection offers a unique opportunity for the Trump family to make its mark on the international luxury hospitality market. It is an entrepreneurial venture that is a true project of passion for two generations of Trumps.”
Trump really is the king of self-centric marketing!
